A Horrabridge teenager has completed an order for seven hand-made garden benches for the village primary school.

Charles Burbage, 15, an engineering student at Devonport High School, has been making the benches at home for the past couple of years.

He said: 'My grandad always used to do a lot of carpentry, so I grew up with woodwork.'

The teenager has previously supplied benches to the Burrator Inn at Dousland and the Royal Oak in Meavy, bringing his total made to date to around 20.

John Clarke, headteacher at Horrabridge Primary, said: 'It came to our attention that Charles had this project making benches.

'We went to see them at the Burrator Inn in Dousland and we liked what we saw, so placed an order.'

The arrival of the benches in the playground has proved popular with pupils at the school.

Mr Clarke said: 'The children have swarmed all over the benches, using them to sit and talk to each other, play board games or do some drawing — as and when the weather has permitted!

'They are really well made, and we're very impressed.'

Charles added: 'I think it's great that the kids are getting to use them.'
