The Tamar and Tavy Gig Club put in a fine appearance at the Mevagissey starred gig event at Pentewan Beach on Saturday, with much valued support from rowers? families. The starred events are league regattas counting towards placings at the county championships held in September at Newquay. The junior crew fought hard to hold a good position in the Under 16s race against boatloads of cornfed Cornish lads. The relatively green crew showed tremendous fighting spirit leaving Mevagissey?s home team in Kerens eating their wake, and with a little more refined technique the feisty juniors will give any opposition a fight for their money. The mixed three girl three boy combo rowed like demons. The Ladies A crew started fourth in the second heat, all racing was timed. Helen Smith, Helen Dickenson, Sam Adlam, Liz Barton, Nicky Sellers and Kate Reeves under the deceptively ferocious guidance of coxswain Jack Baker made the most of the flat, friendly, if smotheringly hot, conditions and put in a fierce effort to emerge 11th out of 23 crews, moving up a division in the league. Not afraid of catching a wave the river girls moved five places up the rankings in preparation for their starting position for Newquay. Three of the A crew teamed up with expert rowers from Caradon, current world champions and all-round Gig Gods, and came in 7th in a big field in the mixed race. Sadly the club was unable to enter a Men?s crew due to lack of available rowers. So any big strong lads out there wanting to wave the flag for the Tavistock area and wanting to spend their Saturdays on the beach, and getting fit to boot, should contact Robin Musgrave on 01822 841064. The Tamar and Tvy Gig Club?s next races will be at Charlestown Regatta on Saturday.
