JAMES Ruth, 20, from Tavistock triumphed with an exciting finish in the St Mellion International Amateur Trophy, winning by just a single stroke. The prestigious Stroke Play Championship was held at Crown Golf?s St Mellion International Hotel, Golf and Country Club. The tournament boasted a finish tense enough to rival the Professionals. James Ruth, a member of England?s Elite Squad and recent selection for the forthcoming Home Internationals, led by five with only three holes to play but found his lead diminished to one playing the 18th. James bogeyed both the 16th and 17th whilst Tim Dykes, the Welsh International, birdied the same two holes. Both competitors made Par 4s on the difficult 18th for James to win by one stroke. James and Tim both finished under par for the tournament. St Mellion International Trophy is played over 72 holes with a cut after two rounds, the leading 40 players going through to the final 36 holes. The competition was held on the challenging par 72 Jack Nicklaus course.
