DESPITE the gloomy forecast for the weekend, the weather was not a problem for the organisers of Okehampton Golf Club's biggest competition of the year. The Mid Devon Foursomes held at Crediton and Okehampton was an enormous success. This competition was thought of by members of the two clubs 20 years ago and has since gone from strength to strength. The entry was well booked with the 360 entrants. Club members from as far afield as Penn in Wolverhampton entered and they were very pleased when they won the overall 36 hole Scratch Cup. The best overall gross score on the two courses went to Dave Adams and Lyndoe Cartwright from Penn with 61points; second were K Lacey and G Sims from Windwhistle with 59 and third Malcolm Hill and Kevin Cornwall from Okehampton with 58. The best net score of the two days was Barry Rees and Gary Cary from Okehampton with 78pts; second were the Okehampton captain Allen Deakin and his wife Penny with 73 and they also won the cup for the best mixed pairing. The best mixed prizes went to David Keir and his wife Mary from Okehampton, all three prize winners scored 68 pts and were decided on countback. Best single sex prizes were won by G Price and H Burton of Credition, second was Kevin Pedrick and Jonny Rattenbury of Okehampton and third P Hobbs of Okehampton and R Field from Crediton. Third in the best Scratch 18 holes at Crediton were Del Owen and Dave Bickle Okehampton. while in the best net scores Barry Down and Rob Camies from Okehampton were second. The best scratch scores at Okehampton were P Davies and Nick Heath from Okehampton with 29 pts on countback while in the best net score first were R Reid and K Wills from Okehampton, second Mr and Mrs Bargary from Windwhistle and third Colin Cornwall and Fred Cooke of Okehampton. The ladies played their qualifying medal on Wednesday. Winning the bronze division with a net 69 was Shirley Stunell; second was Jenny Hutchinson net 70 on countback from Doris Jewell third, also net 70, bringing her handicap down to 29. The silver division was won by Kath Mansell with a net 70, second Cherry James net 72 on countback from Pam Jarman. The Sheelagh Creasy team had their first match of the season on Monday when they played Stover at home. Maureen Willcocks, Doris Jewell, Maureen Howe and Eileen Piper won. Gladys Thatcher and Janet Hatch halved their matches. Sue Glanville fought bravely but lost on the 18th. This gave Okehampton a 2 points to 6 win — a good start to their campaign.
