OKEHAMPTON Golf Club, Saturday, saw over 120 players turn out for the Cyril Masters Trophy. Division One Nick Hobbs winning with 42 pts, second Chris Pike 39 pts (back 9) and third Phil Atherton 39 pts. Division Two: First Brian Kelly 41 pts, second Fred Cooke 40 pts; third Shaun Lewis 39 pts. Division Three was won by Steve Fewings who also won the Cyril Masters Trophy with 44pts, second John Whitehouse 42pts, third Martin Egmore with 41pts. Thursday 21st saw the veterans section continuing their great season at Elfordleigh, although not winning on the day, they did enough to continue their home and away unbeaten run this season. The Ladies Sheelagh Creasy Team went to Bigbury on Friday to play Fingle Glen in the Semi Finals of this prestigious County Competition for Bronze players. Kath Mansell gave the team a great start with a good win, Chris Stevens (second out) lost, Jane Warren out third also won and then Pat Kirby, Eileen Piper (Captain of the team) and Gladys Thatcher won. This meant a 5-2 win for Okehampton so Janet Hatch was called in so the team could prepare for the final against Teign Valley who had beaten Saunton in the morning. The afternoon final was even more exciting with the youth of Teign Valley against the skill of Okehampton. Kath had another emphatic 6/5 win, Chris won 3/2, Jane won on the 18th. Teign Valley fought back and won against Pat, Maureen Howe (brought in for the afternoon) and Gladys. This left the Trophy in the hands of Janet and her opponent. Anyone could be forgiven for thinking Teign Valley would win when Janet went 5 down, but it was a wonderful fight back by the Okehampton number 7 and she was only one down with one hole to play. Which meant it came down to the last putt on the last hole, but with both players parring the hole it meant that the Trophy went to Teign Valley. Hard luck Okehampton, but well done for winning the Runners Up Cup. The ladies played a qualifying Par competition on Wednesday. Penny Deakin played extremely well in the very strong wind, and won the Silver Division with +4 Trish Vick was second with -4 and Cherry James third -6. Winning the Bronze Division was Lorna McCurrach -3 second Eileen Piper -4 and third Janet Hatch -8.
