THE Rotary Club of Okehampton held its inaugural charity golf day at Ashbury Golf Hotel last Wednesday ? and raised double their initial target.
The club had hoped to raise £2,000 from the golf day for youth and sporting organisations, but were delighted to have raised more than £4,000.
The club is now appealing to youth and sporting organisations in the Okehampton area who need financial assistance to come forward so that their needs can be considered.
Representatives of such groups needing help and assistance are asked to provide brief details to Rotarian community chairman Ian Bailey, c/o Ink Print, Station Road, Okehampton, in order that the club can discuss and decide upon allocation of funding.
Thirty-five teams of four competed in an 18 hole stableford competition in somewhat damp conditions.
Okehampton area teams were just edged out by the overall winners, a team from Hendy Lennox Honda of Exeter, which returned a score of 110 points.
Second overall was an Okehampton team captained by Richard Murrin, ably supported by Lloyd Thomas, Brian Kelly and Alan Hawking just one point behind on 109.
A team representing the Fox and Hounds at Bridestowe were rewarded as winners of the best score on the Beeches nine-hole course. Their team comprised F Cooke, G Pengelly, R Hodge and G Hall with a score of 56 points.
In the individual competitions for nearest the pin, among the spoils were John Leonard of Bridestowe, for a creditable first and second prize and John Hoggins of North Tawton who attained second and third prizes.
Mike Luxton, who organised the golf day, said the event was ?without doubt the most successful this club has arranged? and plans were already in hand for future charity golf events.
The Rotary Club extended a huge thank you to all the generous sponsors without whom the remarkable success of the event would not have been possible.
