THE annual Tavistock and District Duke of Edinburgh's awards took place at the Alexander Centre in the presence of West Devon mayor Cllr William Cann and his mayoress, Mrs Christine Cann and Tavistock mayor Cllr Harry Smith and mayoress Mrs Mary Smith.

The award achievers are members of  either our local schools, the open award group and 2312 Squadron Air Training Corps.

Sqn Ldr Phil Newcombe the SW region DofE officer said: 'The award is the best extra curricular achievement a young person can attain alongside their academic studies, being recognised internationally by all employers and universities.

'The Air Cadets nationally are the largest operating authority for the award but equally the award can be gained by joining the town's open award group run by Bob Cawse (01822 840466) or by local students contacting John Collacott at Tavistock College.'

Bob Cawse, the committees vice-chairman, said he was proud of both those who attended and the other young award achievers away on school trips and at universities.
