FOOD was still on ration when Ken and Gilly Gilbert from Okehampton married at Portgate Methodist Church in 1951 so the reception was was very much 'home-made' and low key in the Sunday School room beneath the chapel.
The couple, who celebrated 50 years of marriage recently, can no longer visit the place they wed because it has since been converted into a house.
They met as teenagers and married soon after making their home in Launceston before moving to Okehampton in 1954.
Mr and Mrs Gilbert had four sons and one daughter and now they have ten grandchildren, five boys and five girls.
Mr Gilbert, a former builder, is now employed by KBM Properties of Hatherleigh and his wife, a dressmaker, is known for her community and fundraising work and Okehampton Carnival, in which she has been taking part for more than 35 years.
Her latest cup-winning entry at the carnival this year was as best 'crepe paper' walker/collector 'The First Night of the Proms'.
The couple celebrated their wedding anniversary with their family at the Plume of Feathers in Okehampton.
