AN OKEHAMPTON couple who met at the old district hospital celebrated their golden wedding anniversary recently.
Ron and Doris Jewell were married in Okehampton on December 8, 1953. Doris was originally from the Peter Tavy area but moved to Okehampton as a nurse at the district hospital, where she met Ron, who learnt his trade with Blatchford Nash as an apprentice joiner.
When the couple were courting, they used to flash lights to each other to say goodnight as Ron lived in the road opposite the hospital.
Son Martin said he had never heard the couple row or have crossed words with each other in all their years of marriage. They also have a daughter Carol, and two grandchildren.
Ron is a former president of Okehampton Lions Club, Martin is Lions president this year, and his father will take on the presidency again in the year 2005/06.
The couple have lived on the road towards Throwleigh for the past 25 years, having previously lived in Parklands and Castle Cottages.
