AN INSPIRING woman from Spreyton who has overcome ill health through a successful organ transplant has won four medals in this year's British Transplant Games in Bolton. Wendy Sincock, aged 55, competed at the games from August 7 to August 10, competing in five different swimming disciplines. She claimed gold in the 50 metres backstroke, silver in the 50 metre freestyle, and bronze in the 100 metre and 200 metre freestyle. More than 700 transplant athletes from 55 transplant units across the UK took part in 20 different sports including archery, athletics, golf, tennis and cycling. Selection for the world games in Argentina next year is based on performance at the British Games. This weekend, Wendy has headed off to Krakow for the European Transplant Games to compete in seven events in the pool. She has been hard training for both events at Parklands in Okehampton with Nick Bowls. She said: 'I hope to promote the importance of organ donation. 'Without this greatest of gifts, I would not be here today. As a kidney transplant patient, I am proud to represent the Exeter kidney unit and the UK at both the British and European Transplant Games. 'Nick Bowls does a brilliant job of keeping us fit and teaching us all. 'He's a brilliant coach and I thank him for all his time and dedication that he gives to us all.' Chief of Transplant Sport Andy Eddy, himself a liver transplant recipient, said: 'These are truly the friendly games, demonstrating the success of transplantation, the joy of being alive and the opportunity to give thanks to the donor families. 'We encourage everyone to discuss their wishes about organ donation with their families, without which none of us athletes would be here to compete to the best of our abilities.' 2013/14 was a record year for organ donation and transplantation in the UK, with more than 4,600 transplants carried out for the first time ever. The figures show a 10% increase on the number of transplants performed in the last financial year. Despite the increases in the number of people benefiting from a transplant, around three people die each day across the UK due to a shortage of organs.
