SMASHING a world record on day one of the Cerebral Palsy World Games in Nottingham last week, Yelverton swimmer Jan Langton set her agenda for the rest of the competition.
Her first triumph was the 100m breaststroke (class 6) last Monday. Jan beat the previous record with a time of 2 mins 34.43 secs to win the gold medal.
She then went on to break her own world record for the 50m butterfly to take gold medal number two with a time of 59.42 seconds.
Gold medals three and four followed on Tuesday with the 100m backstroke in 2:07:47 and the 50m freestyle in 1:00:03.
Jan won her fifth and final gold on Wednesday in the 100m freestyle.
'Five races, five golds,' said coach Wendy Pullyblank. 'It was out of this world.
'We never even thought she'd get five golds, she just went up there to do her best.'
Mrs Pullyblank said although Jan had raced against foreign competition before, it was the first time she had faced the best in the world, including top swimmers from Russia, the USA and Australia.
'They were all there and she beat the lot,' said Mrs Pullyblank.
Jan, 14, is still one of the youngest members of the England and Wales team.
She said it was a bit daunting going up against such stiff competition, but she had done her best and was very pleased with her results.
Jan is sponsored by Tavistock Meadowlands pool, where she has recently begun training with the Tavistock swimming team.
Mrs Pullyblank said it had been a great benefit swimming with the club because she had a lot more competition.
Jan is aiming for a berth at the 2004 Olympic games in Athens. Her performance last week will have provided a boost for her ambitions.
Her next big competition will be the nationals in the autumn.
The week-long world games, which began last Monday, involved more than 1,000 competitors from 42 countries taking part in seven different sports, including athletics, football, table tennis, bowls, cycling and powerlifting as well as swimming.
The BBC's Grandstand cameras were poolside for the entire event and will be screening pictures on Sunday August 12.
