A WEST Devon youth worker will be tirelessly pounding the pavements over the next month in the hope of raising enough money to help youngsters get out and about this summer.
Vicki Lloyd will be covering hundreds of miles by taking part in various running and cycling races, hoping to raise money for Tavistock Youth Café summer activities.
At the end of the month she will be running the Edinburgh marathon — her first ever marathon. She will then be taking on an epic 32-mile ultra marathon, the Dartmoor Discovery at the beginning of June and finishing on her bike taking part in the 100 kilometre Dartmoor Classic at the end of the month.
For the last three years, the youth café had funding to pay for various activities and trips that the young members of the organisation could take part in for free over the summer holidays. But this funding has now run out and Vicki has taken it upon herself to try to raise funds to continue to allow the youth café to provide the free activities.
Vicki said: 'The last few years we had Lottery funding so we set up a big play project giving free activities, trips and adventures to the young people for free over the summer. The project lasted three years and it's now finished. This year we are back to a small pot of money. There are lots of people that want to do things over the summer and many that can't afford to pay, so I'm fundraising to try to continue to provide free activities.
'It's the Olympic year so I wanted to do a hat trick of races. Active Co have sponsored me and Howells the butchers have said they will sponsor me as well which is great.'
Vicki will be running the Edinburgh Marathon on May 27. Any business or individual who would like to sponsor Vicki or donate to the youth café can contact Vicki at [email protected]">[email protected]
