LIBRARY users in Tavistock will get a chance to score top football prizes with the launch of a new season of a popular 'fantasy football' competition.

It will be the second year that soccer mad staff at the library have run the league, open to anyone with a library card.

Darryl Harrison, from Tavistock Library, said: 'Last year's 'fantasy football' league turned out to be very popular so we are delighted to be running it again. We also hope people may start their own mini leagues among schools, clubs or family groups to make it really competitive.'

The competition works on a system of points where 'fantasy football' managers can earn extra 'cash' to buy fantasy players by borrowing books, using the library computer or attending events.

Children can earn extra transfer funds by taking part in selected library activities, including the summer reading challenge and the Book Track reading scheme.

Monthly winners in both the over and under 17's categories will get a chance to choose whether to get free tickets to see Plymouth Argyle or Tavistock AFC in action. Runners up will get tickets to see Tavistock AFC.

Each mini-league will receive an email showing team performance in the league, as well as the overall league tables, so they can compete between themselves.

Entrants will be made 'manager' of a squad of football players and allocated a fantasy transfer budget depending on the entrants' age. This budget can be used to 'buy' better players.

The points accumulated are totalled at the end of the month, with the highest scoring team manager winning a prize in two categories.

Last year's winner in the adult competition was Kyle Roberts with Christopher Kirby winning the junior section.
