PEOPLE in WEST Devon who feel slightly under the weather this winter are being encouraged to get advice and information from their local pharmacy or NHS Direct.

A community pharmacist from Exeter said pharmacies offer advice and support, as well as a number of different remedies for minor coughs or colds without people needing to visit their GP.

Pharmacist David Norsworthy said: In the winter people rely heavily on urgent NHS services, such as 999 or emergency departments at large hospitals, so it is important that they are aware of all the other NHS services where they can get advice or treatment.

'All pharmacies provide a range of health services, including medication for common complaints like coughs, colds, aches and pains and other health issues, such as healthy eating, sexual health and giving up smoking.

'You don't even need to make an appointment and a pharmacist is usually available to spend some time with you.

'Most pharmacies also offer health advice over the phone or you can contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.'

Pharmacies and GP practices are closed from December 25-28 and again from January 1-3.

Mr Norsworthy urged people to order enough medication or to get a repeat prescription in plenty of time.

'If you are travelling this winter it is important that you remember to take enough medication with you,' he said.

'GP practices and most pharmacies are closed over the Christmas and New Year bank holidays but if you do need health advice, contact NHS Direct.'

NHS Direct is available for advice about health 24 hours a day, seven days a week giving people the extra reassurance they may need about a health worry.
