OKEHAMPTON Guides are on the search for someone to take a leading role in the organisation which has a funky new image.
Assistant guider of just six months Jean Strudwick has had to step down from the role through study commitments and now the ever-increasing group desperately needs of someone to take over the ropes.
The membership has doubled this term and this may have something to do with the move towards guides being more in control of what they do.
Guider Jenny Crook explained: 'At the moment there is a massive guide renewal. It is more updated, the organisation has a new uniform and guides have a lot more responsibility.
'It's quite an exciting time because instead of the girls being told what to do they can make the choices and we have a new 'Go for It' scheme to replace the old badge system.'
Mrs Crook said there was much more teamwork preparing the girls for the workplace and the senior section of the guides was being renewed making it much more relevant to the 14 and 15-year-olds.
A trip to The Millennium Dome and a Bonfire Party to raise funds for next year's summer camp are coming up in November and the guides are keen to recruit some new help but their main priority is a new assistant guider for Thursday nights from 7-9pm.
No experience is necessary — just a keenness to work with young people, reliability and plenty of enthusiasm. 'In return you will feel you are doing something good for the community and be helping the girls to develop as people' said Mrs Crook.
