FUNDING of £100,000 has been granted for road safety schemes in Okehampton but it will be up to the town to decide what form they take.
A scheme which improves priority for pedestrians in Paradise Square and St James Street will be first on the list and if funds allow improving safety for residents in Station Road will be next.
The West Devon Partnership Committee has been successful in its bid for funding to Devon County Council's Executive Committee to carry out work in the Okehampton area.
Local service officer for Devon County Council Mike Parnell said the aim was to try and reduce the potential conflict between pedestrians and motor vehicles in the Paradise Square area.
It was one of the things that came out of a report by Atlantic Consultants on the way ahead for Okehampton some years ago.
'It will be a question of us getting together with West Devon Borough Council, the town council and other groups to get exactly what everybody wants, he said.
The work is to link in with the enhancement of the area ideas which have been put forward by artist Ray Smith who was commissioned by West Devon Borough Council.
'The idea is to reduce the amount of available road space so there is more space for pedestrians to walk around and to sit,' added Mr Parnell.
