THE beautiful spell of weather has made the game of golf a real pleasure to play once more and the conditions certainly made the prestigious Cheltenham and Gloucester trophies, played at Okehampton Golf Club, a very competitive game with some excellent scoring transpiring on Saturday.
Although Mark Wonnacott won division one with a gross 72, net 64, on countback from Harry Hawking, Harry won the Scratch trophy with a gross 70! John Leonard was third with a gross 77, net 66.
Division two was won by Rick Camies, who also won the Handicap trophy with a net 61. Paul Macdonald was second with net 65 on countback from Russell Dibble. Division three was won by Nick Waldron net 62, second was Steve Browne net 64 and third was Sam Woollacott net 65.
On Monday the ladies invited Bude for a friendly fourball better ball match. Four teams participated and the home side were convincing winners. On Wednesday the ladies played their Daily Mail foursomes qualifier, in not such good conditions, to decide who would be representing them in the knockout stages next year.
The competition was still keen but Jenni Hutchinson and Sue Gowers eventually won with 29 pts on countback from Sally Griffins and Amanda Winsor. Lin Atkinson and Cherry James were third with 28 points.
