GOLDEN Jubilee celebrations in Bere Alston and Bere Ferrers started on the Saturday with a Garden Open day, with fourteen gardens of varied types in the peninsula taking part.

The Tamar Belle Heritage Group launched its new visitor centre — which had also been landscaped — at Bere Ferrers Station, which houses a permanent exhibition of railway, agricultural and other local history.

In the evening village organisations entertained in the Parish Hall in Bere Alston with 'This is your reign', illustrating the past five decades in song, dance, fashion, music and comment.

Sunday saw a civic service at St Andrew's Church in Bere Ferrers conducted by the Rev Nick Law, following which the bells were rung in celebration.

Celebrations continued in Bere Ferrers in the afternoon with old-fashioned games and a fancy hat and 1950s dress competition. The local WI served free teas for those who participated in or watched the races such as egg and spoon, slow cycle and sack race. Commemorative certificates were awarded to all who took part.

In the evening there was a barbecue on Bere Ferrers quay and a hog roast with music by local band Blitz at the Recreation Field in Bere Alston.

A children's fun day was held at Bere Alston School on Monday, with a tea party for senior citizens on Tuesday in the Parish Hall with the Stannary Brass Band.

A raffle was held on the Wednesday and Jubilee mugs are being distributed to all children in the parish up to and including primary school age.
