ONE of the many sports included in last Saturday's Devon Games to Inspire was that of the girls advanced tag rugby; a new addition to the games that sees an introduction to contact rugby and the 10 a-side game. West Devon entered a strong squad of only 11 with high prospects and did not disappoint.
The first game saw them run away 11 tries to one winners against a fresh Teignbridge team, among the 11 scored were three individual hat tricks from Rodgers, Longden and Hoare and a brace from Dawe.
This game also saw two fine debuts from McCormick and Cox who were superb all day and showed their prospects as potential contact players at Tavistock RFC.
The second group game was another fine win against Torridge, resulting in seven tries to two, with Rodgers again bagging another hat-trick.
The final game of the group determined a potential final or third and fourth place play off in the next round and unfortunately West Devon went down 7-6 after leading the whole game. Despite this disappointment West Devon rebuilt and went away in bronze position after a fine 9-8 victory over a strong Exeter side. Player of the tournament was Rodgers after much deliberation due to the high standard of rugby played from all the girls.
