THIS season, more than 40,000 students from 2,600 schools are taking part in the ?Coca-Cola? English Schools Cup, making it the largest tournament of its kind in Europe. Boys? and girls? under-13 sides from schools all over the country are competing to become national champions of this prestigious competition. As the first stage of the ?Coca-Cola? English Schools Cup, 44 ESFA County Cup tournaments are being played across the country. Locally, the Devon County Cups have been taking place since September and the County Cup Finals were recently played with results as follows: Girls: Estover Community College 5, Tavistock College 2. Claire Crowther, coach of Tavistock College said: ?I?m very pleased with the girls? performance ? they scored two great goals through strikers Rebecca McMullin and Rebecca Gordon. ?Throughout the match defender Sarah Lucas and midfielder Heidi Davies put in great efforts. Everyone at Tavistock College is proud of them for making it to the county final,? she said. The winners of the Devon County Cups now advance on to the ?Coca-Cola? South Western Schools Cup to be played in February and March. The best school sides will then compete in the National Semi-Finals and National Finals. Legendary manager Sir Bobby Robson kicked off this season?s tournament by giving his backing to the tournament and praising ?Coca-Cola? for their support: ?Support, like this, for grassroots football really is the future of the domestic game,? he said. ?More than ever we?re crying out for well-organised, motivating support for young talent to help them on the road to professional football. ?The ?Coca-Cola? English Schools Cup is a great example of this ? it gets boys and girls up and active and out there enjoying the game,? he said.
