GILLY Jarvis is the Yelverton ladies' champion!

On September 12 the ladies played the club championship, a 36-hole, stroke competition.

Winner of the Underhill Scratch Cup was Gilly with a gross 167. Runner-up was Belinda McSherry with a gross 168 and third was Marie Watson with a gross 172.

The Underhill Handicap cup was won by Chris Longden with a net 147, runner-up was Marie Watson with a net 150 and third was Diane Reardon with a net 154.

On September 9 the ladies held a four-ball better ball open competition. On a summer day 116 ladies competed for prizes, on a course in superb condition.

Winners were Caroline Theyer (Yelverton) and Chris Spyer (China Fleet) with 46 points. Runners-up were K Chaston and R Cirin with 43 points. Third were Bunty Salz and June Smalley with 43 points, and as the best scoring Yelverton couple they won the Joan Foster trophy.

On Sunday a mixed open greensome competition was held at Yelverton. The winners were Mr and Mrs Stone (Saunton) with 43 points. Runners-up were Mr Colome and Mrs Baskwill (Burnham and Berrow) with 43 points. Third were Mr Blaber and Mrs Sweeney with 42 points, and as the best scoring Yelverton couple they won the Carnival Cup.

Laura Eastwood competed in the British Ladies' Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Hunstanton between September 11 and 13.

She qualified to play in all four rounds, with scores of 75, 84, 77 and 80, a total of 316 strokes. Becky Brewerton, of Abergele, won with a total of 291 strokes.

Laura is in Italy competing in the Italian Ladies' Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship, which takes place this week. She is one of four English ladies chosen to represent England and has been selected to play for the English U21 squad in 2003.

Earlier this year Gilly Jarvis and Di Friend qualified to play in the regional final of the NSPCC national tournament, held at Okehampton on September 2. They won the regional final and will now play in the national final, which will be held at Belton Woods on Sunday September 29.
