TRIUMPHANT gig rowers from Tamar and Tavy returned from Port Izaac regatta with the Men?s A team trophy. Monica Mitchell, a new cox for the men?s team, got the best spot on the start line. The crew powered away to the first mark leading the pack. This meant they had clear water and left the pack in their wake snarled up. Not sure if they could sustain the pace over the two mile course, the crew of John Hillson, Julie Williams, Sean Lock, Richard Cole, Richard Murrin and Ian Paige, leaned back and lengthened the stroke to lead the whole race. They still had enough in the bag to sprint to the finish, with chasing boats Petroc and Speedwell yelling at their crews to catch up; but in vain as Ginette crossed the line with at least five boat lengths to spare. Captain Bill Stacey-Norris could not believe his first stint as an umpire concluded with his team winning. Cox Monica Mitchell leapt straight from the men?s race to the mixed event. Spurred on by the men?s success the rapidly scrambled mixed crew, who had not previously trained together, rowed a good race over this long course out of Port Gaverne. The crew of Trish Dugmore, Jane Cole, Mathew Pinney, Chris Dill, Peter and a Padstow rower held a good course and were pleased with an 8th place, well up the field.
