Tavistock 20
Kingsbridge 10
TAVISTOCK caused something of an upset on Saturday winning their EDF Senior Vase tie against Kingsbridge, who are currently riding near the top of the division above.
Tavistock started well, immediately taking the game to Kingsbridge. After ten minutes Kingsbridge were penalised and Matt Witcher kicked the penalty to put Tavistock in front.
Tavistock increased their lead after a clever lineout. When hooker Ben Sutton found Will Brown at the tail, Will linked with Duncan Law and then raced over for a try with Witcher adding the extras.
Kingsbridge then put together some attacking phases of play, culminating with winger Andy Nichol scorching along the right wing to score.
Tavistock hit back and with the forwards dominating possession they pinned Kingsbridge deep in their own half. Centre Mark Deebner created havoc in the Kingsbridge with his direct running.
After winning first phase possession and recycling at the breakdown Tavistock worked Deebner's fellow centre Dom Clifton over on the right for a debut league try.
The second half was a more even affair with Tavistock playing against the slope. Kingsbridge were able to secure better field position and opened the second half scoring with a try from No 8 Matt Hamilton, a half-time replacement.
At 15–10 and with a quarter of the game remaining, it was nicely poised. Tavistock secured victory when after securing clean lineout possession from the excellent Andy Hunt, Duncan Law was driven over for the score.
This was a sound team performance with some notable individual performances from skipper Jake Phillips, his two back row colleagues Duncan Law and Will Brown and fly half Matt Witcher.
This Saturday Tavistock entertain Plymstock Albion in the Cornwall and Devon League. Kick off 3pm.
