COMPLAINTS about grass cuttings covering the headstones of graves in Calstock Cemetery are being addressed by the parish council. Resident Denise Burch told members of the council she could not understand why anyone would leave the cemetery in ?such a state? after the grass had been cut. ?The grass is all over the headstones ? it is in a terrible state and it is not respectful to the dead or their families.? Cllr Norma Greenslade said it was particularly bad on the cremation site where the headstones were on the ground. ?I could not see any of them when I walked through the churchyard,? she said. Parish clerk Julia Massey said the collection of grass cuttings was not part of the grass cutting contract and it was always worse for the first cuts at the beginning of the season. She said she had received more complaints this year than in previous years and had asked the contractors to go back to Calstock and Albaston Cemeteries and clear up the grass. ?We will have to look at the contract for next year and maybe include an element for clear up, but it will increase our budget enormously,? she said. ?Perhaps later in the season it will not be so much of a problem.?
