COACHING has started for West Devon's entry into this year's Devon Youth Games, which is being hosted for the first time by the borough council in Okehampton on Saturday June 30. Bringing together more than 1,000 young people from eight local authority areas in the county, the event is a magnificent arena for promoting community youth sport. The Games will take place in Simmons Park using facilities at Okehampton College, Parklands Leisure Centre, Okehampton Tennis Courts and the all weather pitch. Events this year for young people in school year groups four to ten, include aquathlon (swimming/running), athletics, badminton, girls' cricket, gymnastics, hockey, netball, street sports, tag rugby, tennis and volleyball. West Devon Coaching programme for the games are being held over the coming weeks and any children interested are welcome to come along. Trial dates, times and venues are: Athletics, school years 4, 5 and 6, boys/girls. Coaching on Tuesday May 15 6-7pm at Tavistock College. Aquathlon,school years 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, boys/girls. Trial on Sunday May 13 10.30am at Parklands. Badminton,school years 8 and 9, boys/girls. Coaching starts on Wednesday May 23 5.30 -7.30pm at Horrabridge Primary School. Cricket,school years 8 and below, girls only. Coaching starts Sunday May 13, 10.30am at Whitchurch Cricket Club. Gymnastics, school years 3 and 4, girls/boys. Coaching tomorrow ( Friday) 5.15pm -6pm at Okehampton College Gym. Hockey, school years 6, 7 and 8, boys/girls. Coaching on Monday May14, 5pm -6 pm at Kelly College OR Saturday May 12 10 am-11 am at Okehampton College. Netball, school years 8 and 9, girls. Coaching on Monday May 14 5.30-6.30pm at Kelly College. Street sports, school years 8, 9, 10, 11, boys/ girls. Disciplines: skateboard, BMX, inline. Trial on Saturday June 9 10am -11 am at Tavi skate Park. Trial on Saturday June 16 10am -11 am at Okehampton Skate Park. Tag Rugby, school Years 6 and below, boys/girls. School years 7, 8 and 9, girls. Coaching starts Sunday May 13 11am -12am at Tavistock RFC. Tennis, school years 6, 7 and 8, boys/girls. Coaching starts Saturday May 12 10am - noon at Okehampton Tennis Courts OR Sunday May 13 11am - noon at Tavistock Tennis Club. Volleyball, school years 7 and 8, boys/girls.
