BUDDING nautical engineers have just a few weeks left to build their vessels for a raft race which will raise money for Tavistock Mencap.
The race, from Morwellham Quay to Calstock, will take place on Sunday July 20 and will be started by the mayor of Tavistock, Norma Woodcock.
Rafts can be any size with any number of crew, and prizes will be awarded in five categories: fastest overall raft, fastest all female crew, best dressed crew, most interesting raft (to have some sort of theme) and the most technically innovative raft.
Rafts should be homemade and propelled by paddles, oars, rotating paddles or propeller ? all hand or foot-powered only.
Morwellham Quay have kindly allowed entrants to bring their rafts in sections and assemble them in situ before the race.
There is an entrance fee of £5 per crew member and sponsorship and entry forms are available from Rex Harpham on 01822 612981 or 615953.
All money raised will be divided between Tavistock Mencap and a charity of the entrant?s choice. Every entrant will receive a free pasty and drink on completion of the race! Crews must supply their own life jackets and arrive at Morwellham by 10am to register for the race at 11am.
