A SCHOOL sport partnership based at Callington Community College has been awarded a grant of £8,750 to ensure that the London 2012 Olympics are brought to life for young people in East Cornwall.
The money will enable the college and other schools in the area to make the most of opportunities available through the official London 2012 education programme 'Get Set'.
It will fund Get Set workshops for local teachers, innovative competitions for young people and will provide support for other curriculum areas in schools
Callington Comm-unity College is a member of the Get Set network and is one of 125 schools who have been awarded a grant, selected from more than 600 schools who applied.
Michelle Roberts, development manager for school sports partnership ARENA, travelled to London to meet with other successful schools:
'This is a unique opportunity which will enable young people, schools and teachers to be inspired by London 2012, and will make a real difference to the work we do in the build up to 2012,' she said.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has worked closely with the Department for Education, which is funding the scheme, called 'Plan your 2012'.
'Plan your 2012' offers schools that join the London 2012 'Get Set network' reward and recognition scheme the chance to share their passion for the Games, inspiring and engaging other schools, young people and building partnerships across their community.
LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe said: 'Members of the Get Set network, like ARENA, are brilliant advocates for London 2012 - demonstrating what a positive difference linking learning to the Games can make to young people.
'Participating in 'Plan your 2012' gives engaged schools a fantastic opportunity to take the lead in supporting other schools and their local community, enabling them to make the most of London 2012.'
Children's Minister, Tim Loughton said: 'Sport can bring out the best in everyone and the London 2012 Games is a great opportunity for us to inspire a generation of young people. Through funding for Get Set we are helping schools spread the Olympic and Paralympic values across their local communities, as well as providing more opportunities for competitive sport.'
