REMEMBER, remember, the fifth of November — another Guy Fawkes night is almost upon us, and the focus will be on the Sticklepath Fireshow.
This year's show, entitled 'A Frightful Fantasy', is again being staged with the wonderful support of the local community, including the children who participate in workshops preceding the show and performing on the night.
Behind the scenes, up to 200 locals will play their part in making the show the success it has become.
Janice Goodwin, the chair of the organising committee said: 'The fireshow happens entirely because of the volunteers, with ages ranging from ten upwards, who all give up their time to do their bit.
'This really does create a fantastic community spirit and although the show's location is Sticklepath, the community feeling is very much Okehampton-wide, with volunteers throughout the local area and the majority of the audience being from the Okehampton district.'
In September organisers put out a plea for second-hand timber to build the show's famed stage, which is traditionally set on fire at the end of the performance.
Janice and the whole team behind the fireshow expressed thanks to the community for all their help, and to everyone who donated timber for the stage this year.
Janice said: 'We have had one or two hiccups in organising this year's fireshow, with one of our usual timber suppliers pulling out due to the economy.
'But following our plea, people did get in touch and help us get together as much wood as we needed. We are just putting the finishing touches to the stage and I am sure the show will be as spectacular as ever.'
This year's show is the 28th since its inception in 1984. The story will see Guy Fawkes finding himself caught up in the haunting myths and legends of Dartmoor.
Previous shows have led Guy on adventures as far away as Egypt, China and India.
As always the show's story is top secret until the night and as with tradition, Guy will go up in flames on the bonfire.
The event held at the National Trust's Finch Foundry field attracts up to 3,000 visitors each year.
This year's show starts at 7.30pm with gates open at 6pm. Entry for adults is £7 and children aged 14 and under £3. Refreshments are available. Parking in the village will be limited, but a free shuttle bus runs from Okehampton, stopping at Martin's Newsagents and Giblands bus stop. The first bus is at 6.15pm with the service running until 7.15pm. Buses will start returning people to Okehampton after the show.
Tickets are available in advance from Donald's Menswear and the Flower Pot in Okehampton as well as the Sticklepath and South Zeal Stores.
They will also be available on on the night from 6pm on the main gate outside Finch Foundry.
No alcohol, fireworks or sparklers are allowed on the field.
