DARTMOOR prison will play host to a jailbreak this month when people from all over the country take part in the challenge to raise money for charity. This is the 24th Dartmoor Jailbreak since 1984 and so far a total of £540,000 has been raised for the Vranch House School for children with cerebral palsy and physical difficulties in Exeter. Organisers are still inviting teams to enter the event. Teams of two or more have been challenged to go 'on the run' from Dartmoor Prison wearing prison gear or other disguises. The teams are released from the old prison officers' club car park with between 12 and 96 hours to get as far away as they can. They must not pay for transport and must keep within the law. The escape route may be pre-arranged, free tickets may be obtained or others can pay for or lend transport. Minimum age is 16. Those who create new records with their performance will win a place in the Jailbreak Book of Records. So far, the furthest distance reached is New Zealand by two grandmothers, the most countries reached in four days is 22 by Torbay Police and the furthest run is two marathons in two days by 29 Commando Royal Artillery. Funds from the jailbreak help run the school and centre and buy equipment such as walking and communication aids for children. Teams can also split the funds raised 50/50 with a charity of their choice. The 24th anniversary jailbreak takes place on Saturday, April 21.
