IDEAS are being sought for Okehampton's biggest sporting event of the year 'Sportsweek' which in 2002 aims to involve more clubs and individuals than ever before.
From July 8-14 Okehampton Community Recreation Association (OCRA) will put on its fourth Sportsweek and this time it has been helped by a grant from the Lottery Awards for All scheme of £4,950.
Manager of OCRA Stuart Lord said there would be some new initiatives during the week which will provide over 35 different sports for people to try plus tournaments and competitions and the money would also pay for the organising.
'In the past everything has been done voluntary because OCRA is always struggling for funding but this time we will actually be able to pay for it,' he said. 'In addition we will be getting specialist coaches in to run events in Okehampton College and Okehampton Primary School.'
Some of the sports taster sessions and events planned are fencing, badminton, basketball, golf, gymnastics, volleyball, trampolining, football, tennis, netball, table tennis, skating and climbing — and canoeing is one of the new sports likely to be added to the list.
But OCRA is always trying to extend the number of sports on offer and wants these to be 'people-led'.
'If anyone wishes to try something which we do not already offer, then tell us and we can do something about it,' said Stuart.
'Previously new clubs have sprung up as a result of the popularity of Sportsweek and we want that to continue.'
Sports clubs and individuals are being asked to contact Stuart on 01837 54546 to become involved in Sportsweek.
