WREN Music is launching a brand new plucked string orchestra this autumn — for players of the mandolin.
The idea of the Mandolin Orchestra of Devon (MOOD) is to bring players together to meet each other, learn specific mandolin repertoire, and to develop technique and expertise while providing a relatively rare opportunity for mandolin players to play together.
The first rehearsal session takes place on Saturday September 10 between 2pm and 5pm in Fairplace Church.
MOOD is open to players of all sizes of mandolin, from piccolo to mando-bass, as well as closely-related instruments such as the bouzouki.
Each session will begin with a workshop focusing on elements of technique and answering questions. The group will then learn and rehearse pieces specially written for mandolin ensembles. The music will consist of new and traditional pieces, and those taken from the early 20th century, the reputed 'golden age' of the mandolin.
Being able to read music is helpful but not essential, with audio files as well as scores posted on Wren Music's website before each session. Parts will cater for a range of abilities, but basic knowledge of the mandolin is required. All ages above 14 years old are welcome.
The music director for MOOD will be Matt Norman. An innovative and entertaining musician, Matt explores traditional and contemporary English music as a performer, arranger, composer and songwriter. His imaginative approach to repertoire is complemented by his virtuosity on the mandolin.
He has recently recorded and toured with Ella Edmondson, including performances at the Plymouth Pavilions and Royal Albert Hall, supporting Jools Holland.
Sessions will be held on Saturday November 12, January 21, March 10 and May 19. Each session costs £15, £10 concessions. To book your place visit http://www.wrenmusic.co.uk">www.wrenmusic.co.uk or call 01837 53754
