AFTER a few delays in printing, Tavistock historian Gerry Woodcock's new book is available at last.

Gerry was commissioned by the Tavistock Parochial Church Council to write a history of the church.

In hardback, it exceeds 300 fascinating pages, with more than 90 integrated colour and mono illustrations.

The church was built in the 13th century on its current site, immediately alongside the precinct of the Benedictine Abbey founded in year A.D.974.

The book follows its development and additions such as the aptly named Clothworkers' Aisle, built in the 15th century.

But most important are the people — 57 vicars, 36 patrons, and numerous curates, readers, wardens, musicians, choristers, ringers and other officers of the church come to life under Gerry's pen and it is to these that the book is dedicated.

Almost 400 copies were pre-ordered and will be available for collection at the parish centre, next to the vicarage on Tuesday May 1 between 2 and 5 pm; on Friday May 4 between 10am and 1pm or on Thursday May 10, between 1pm and 3pm.

On each of these occasions it will be possible to buy a copy of the book. It is important that people collecting pre-ordered copies bring along their acknowledgement receipt.
