MORE than 700 years after it began, Tavistock Goose Fair is still proving it is as popular as ever as thousands flocked to the town yesterday (Wednesday) despite the changeable weather. Bustling with stalls selling all kinds of wares, pitches were again highly sought after ? 230 traders filled the streets. Members of the Showman?s Guild provided fairground rides in the Bedford Car Park, Bedford Square and the Guildhall Car Park and three park and ride schemes brought fairgoers into the town centre. Deputy town clerk Rosie Kehoe said special flyers had been produced this year for tourist information centres so no-one could fail to know about Goose Fair. ?The numbers never seem to drop off ? the event is always popular and the more the merrier as far as we are concerned,? she said. ?We may not have the geese parading through the town like we used to but there is still a goose sale at the cattle market and the town crier was carrying a metal goose so everyone would know the origins of the event.?
