THE £100,000 project to replace the ageing footbridge over the River Tavy in Tavistock?s Meadows will move a step closer to completion next week when work starts on the installation of a new gas supply to Meadowlands pool. The gas pipe will replace the existing one, which is attached to the Pixon Lane footbridge. The route of the main pipe will be from Plymouth Road near the tennis courts, through the grass verge by the courts and through the Meadows to the rear of the pool. A spokesman for West Devon Borough Council said: ?The town council will begin by excavating trenches in the Meadows during the week commencing September 4th. During this time it will be necessary to close the footpath and canal bridge for up to five days. ?Pedestrians will be asked to use alternative routes to cross the canal, to the rear of the Wharf and via Rose Walk near to the tennis courts.? Tavistock town clerk Roger Howard said: ?We can?t do anything to the footbridge until we have West Devon?s gas pipe re-routed. Then we can remove the old pipe off the bridge and get prepared to start putting in the new one, which is being built at the moment.? Col Howard said the town council had not set a firm date for the installation of the new bridge, but hoped it would be by the end of October. The fast food cabin will be moved away from its position by the bridge for a short time while the work takes place, but returned once the project is complete.
