THERE is another success for Wutan Tavistock Kung Fu and Tai Chi Club. Gary McAulay (pictured below), from Yelverton, who has been training in Kung Fu since the club opened over a year ago, managed to beat stiff competition from more than 30 in the men's division of the Wutan National Championships held in Southampton. It was Gary's first ever entry into a competition that attracts competitors from all over the UK. He travelled with fellow competitors from his main club in Plymouth on the three-hour journey. The international club celebrated its 30th anniversary in the UK this year in Southampton with more than 200 members performing Tai Chi, a slow form of Chinese martial arts practised by thousands in China to alleviate stress and encourage healthier living. The Wutan branch in Tavistock has been running for over a year at the United Reformed Church Hall and currently meets on Mondays between 8pm and 9,30pm and Fridays 7pm to 8.30pm. With already a high demand, the club also started to offer classes in Tai Chi that currently meets every Friday, 6pm to 7pm.
