AS part of her silver Duke of Edinburgh award, 14-year-old Lucy Creamer is taking on the challenge of raising funds for Okehampton Community Garden. Lucy is planning on making her own jams and pickles using locally grown produce. She will be given a small budget that she will need to turn into as much profit as she possibly can. To help decrease her financial out-goings, Lucy needs to be able to pick as many blackberries, cooking apples, plums, elderberries and other fruit as possible, and also needs donations of clean jam jars with their lids. She will be utilising recycled paper, card, ribbons and fabrics to decorate her finished produce. Lucy then plans to sell her produce to friends and family and also at events in Okehampton. Lucy said: 'I can't wait to start the exciting challenge of raising money for Okehampton Community Garden. I've never done anything quite like this before, so it will be a sharp learning curve, but I will be trying out my home made produce of jam on my friends and family!' To help Lucy raise as much money as she can, she would be grateful if anyone has a surplus of fruit they can donate, which she or a member of the community garden can collect. Alternatively, you are invited to bring your excess produce or jam jars along to an open meeting that is being organised by Okehampton Community Garden on Friday, September 12 from 7.30pm to 9pm at Growing our Future's Eco Hub at Okehampton College. The event is being organised to give interested members of the public the opportunity to learn about progress and projects for the garden, while enjoying a cake and drink. Entry is free but donations for refreshments will be greatly appreciated. Places will be limited due to the size of the Eco Hub.
