l AN amazing total of more than £6,600 was raised during a coffee morning and fundraising event organised jointly by Yelverton and Horrabridge churches on Monday. Following the event there were prayers and recollection at St Paul?s in Yelverton, led by the Rev Valerie Honey of the Methodist church. l Staff at a West Devon restaurant have donated a day?s pay to help victims of the Asian tsunami disaster. Fifteen workers at Percy?s Country Hotel and Restaurant in Virginstow decided to make the sacrifice after watching the shocking scenes of devastation on television. Ross Hayward, Percy?s spokesman said: ?We came back into work after Christmas and we all felt that we wanted to do something to help. This was a way that everyone could be involved and I don?t think people are going to miss one day?s pay out of 365.? The staff have raised £960 which will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which is co-ordinating the relief effort. Mr Hayward is hoping other restaurants and businesses in Devon and Cornwall will follow their example. ?There are a lot of businesses bigger than ourselves, and they could raise a lot of money very quickly and make a real difference,? he said. l A collection was taken during and after the Tavistock AFC match against Truro City last Saturday. £119.17 was collected. l Members of Tavistock Golf Club organised a collection on New Year?s Eve, which raised almost £500. The club has donated the money to Tavistock Rotary Club, enabling it to buy another Shelterbox. l Safeway in Tavistock had collected a splendid £2,500 in their till-side buckets as the Times went to press this week. l The village of Northlew is also doing its bit to support the fundraising appeal. A collection was made for the fund to help victims of the disaster at the New Year?s Eve disco in the Victory Hall. The event proved popular and £400 was raised.
