A FUN-PACKED charity fundraiser is all set to take place at the Exeter Arms, Okehampton on Sunday November 25. The day has been organised by Kerry Hampson, a mother of two from Okehampton, who works at the Exeter Arms. Ms Hampson, 27, has organised the event in aid of Headway Devon, a charity that provides care and support for children and adults with brain injuries. Her son, Cameron, aged five, has a rare condition known as Moyamoya disease, a brain condition that is caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain. Ms Hampson said: ?Moyamoya disease is a very rare disease meaning Cameron doesn?t get enough blood to his brain. It can cause strokes and fits, and can be fatal. ?After it was discovered, Cameron had to have two operations on his brain to enable more blood to get through.? Cameron?s condition was compounded when he suffered a separate brain injury after falling out of a window. This caused a massive blood clot on his brain and a fractured skull. He had to undergo life-saving surgery at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. He was put on a life support machine and surgeons had to remove part of his skull to relieve the swelling on his brain. Amazingly, after two days, Cameron started breathing for himself and after a three-week stay in hospital, returned home. Ms Hampson said: ?He now has to wear a special helmet to protect his brain where surgeons had to remove part of his skull.? Cameron, his twin brother Joshua, and Ms Hampson receive regular support from Headway Devon, travelling to Exeter most weekends to take part in activities that the charity offers. Ms Hampson said of Headway Devon: ?They have been amazing. The help we receive is second to none. ?Cameron doesn?t feel like there is anything wrong with him when he?s there. ?He?s treated normally and Joshua loves being involved. It is also nice for me to talk to others who have been through similar ordeals.? The fundraising event on Sunday will include a sponsored silence, leg waxing and an auction and raffle with hundreds of pounds worth of exclusive prizes. Everyone is welcome to attend the fundraiser. The sponsored silence starts at 12 noon, the leg-waxing at 3.30pm and the auction and raffle at 7pm. All events are at the Exeter Arms, Okehampton.
