YELVERTON Tennis Club is in its 21st year and started the new season with a fun tournament run by club chairman John Marshall. Janet Strelling and Chris Hill were the winners. The main club tournament begins on May 15 with the finals on the weekend of July 9/10. This will hopefully involve most members and finals afternoon will be followed by a social event. The Plymouth and District tennis leagues have begun and Yelverton has entered two men?s teams in Divisions 2 and 5, captained by Phil Gasche. The ladies have three teams in Division 1, 2 and 4, captained by Ann Short. The league season runs until July 29. Simon Murray runs the excellent junior section with the help of some willing parents. The juniors have coaching on Saturday mornings with club coach Roger Froud and have two teams in the local under 18 league playing their matches on Sunday mornings. Club sessions are held three times a week and all standards are welcome. If you are interested in joining a friendly tennis club for team or social tennis, and social events, contact membership secretary Mags Berry on 01822 855583. Results for the first week of the league season were as follows: Men?s A team against Ivybridge B saw David Williams make his debut for the A team partnering Roger Froud, with Terry Leonard partnering Phil Gasche; results 4-4. In Division 5 the men?s B team lost 0-8 against St Mellion B. The ladies? A team, with Emily Murray making her A team debut were unlucky to lose 4-6 to Ivybridge B. The ladies? B team, having just been promoted to Division 2, had a good win 6-3 against Plymstock. As a result of ladies availability in week one the C team were strengthened by Ann Short and Julie Whelton and with Joy Tynan and Lyn Jones making up the other pair Yelverton had a comfortable win over St Budeaux D 7-2.
