THE Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust, created to preserve the traditional type of Dartmoor pony, is running a series of fun, outdoor volunteer days for families and local groups at Bellever Forest at Postbridge.
The events will suit children and adults of all abilities. Outdoor clothing can be provided and lots of fun is guaranteed, as well as being able to help to preserve Dartmoor's history and ecology.
Some dates will involve working with specially trained ponies to rake the wild, tough grasses such as Molinia, that threatens to smother the heather and short grass, which is vital for animals and insects to thrive.
Another event will involve cutting out fir trees and removing a variety of vegetation from around hut circles and ancient pounds on Bellever.
This will be a perfect opportunity for interested people to be really active and get out and about and learn about Dartmoor, the ponies, archaeology, flora and fauna on Bellever, while carrying out important conservation work to manage the site.
The events are suitable for families, school groups, special interest groups, local history, conservation and community groups — anyone who loves spending time outdoors and meeting new people.
The Molinia raking with ponies on site event will take place on Sunday, December 2, Saturday, January 12 and Sunday, February 24.
