Yelverton firsts v

Tiverton and Bickleigh

YELVERTON narrowly missed out on what would have been a well deserved victory by failing to take the final two wickets on a dying pitch. The 15 points achieved from their winning draw keeps them in contention for promotion.

Tiverton skipper Andy Pengelly asked the home side to bat and was made to rue his decision as the Bohemians dominated the first half of their innings. Most of the top six contributed with Ricky McDowell continuing his excellent form with an accomplished 48. Colin Broughton batted with his usual aggression to make 46 and at 140-2 off 26, the Bohemians had a formidable target in their sights.

Tiverton fought back strongly through skipper Pengelly (10-3-31-5) and the Yelverton innings progressed at a more modest pace. David Scott (18no) batted with intelligence to steer the lower order to a competitive 206-9 and maximum batting points.

Once again, the Yelverton opening attack of Bennett (10-2-22-2) and Cunningham (12-3-40-3) blew away the early order, leaving Tiverton reeling at 82-5 off 22. J Kelland at three hung around for a stubborn 34 and as the pitch died J Hall (29) and Pengelly (24no) were able to steady the ship. The Yelverton spin pair of Vince (9-3-22-1) and Guy (8-1-36-2) bowled extremely well again, taking wickets to load the pressure on Tiverton. Skipper Jez Stokes rotated his bowlers but Pengelly, although giving some chances, managed to hold on at 164-8.

This week Yelverton Bohemians travel to Lewdown.
