From the Times to the town

THE mayor of Tavistock was presented with a painting by the proprietor of the Times Gazette, Sir Ray Tindle, on Monday.

The painting, by local artist Arthur Read, was bought at an auction in Tavistock and presented to Cllr Roger Mathew during a lunch at the Moorland Links Hotel near Yelverton.

Sir Ray said: 'The whole staff of the 143-year-old Tavistock Times Gazette is here today.

'We are all delighted that you and the town council are to accept the painting — we are most honoured, sir.'

Cllr Mathew thanked Sir Ray for a 'most generous gesture' — he said councillors have decided to hang the painting in the Rundle Room at the town hall.
