WE were interested in the report (February 18) of a Goosander on the Tavy.

We lived in Totnes for many years and one winter this unusual and striking bird made its home on the River Dart, where it could be seen with Mallards. It stayed for many week and we were able to watch it. The Goosander breeds on Scottish lochs and is one of the few ducks which nests in tree holes.

The River Dart had resident swans which would sometimes take flight over the bridge — a very beautiful sight. The blue flash of a kingfisher in flight and cormorants at rest in a tree stump with wings outstretched for drying were among the many delights of walking by the River Dart.

These were the days when cargo boats arrived from Norway and Finland and delivered timber to Reeves yard.
