WOULD it be possible for West Devon Borough Council to compulsorily purchase the existing boat park and adjoining foreshore at Weir Quay to preserve it for future generations of boating enthusiasts?

The council has already made a welcome contribution to safeguard boating activity by taking out a lease on the slipway at Cleave to ensure that members of the public are not denied access to the river for recreation.

The purchase of the land comprising the boat park would appear to be a logical next step.

One would hope any initiative of this kind would involve a financial commitment from interest groups and individual members of the public as well as ratepayers in general.

From a planning perspective, the use of the land for boat-related activities is established.

Acquisition of this land would enable the council to protect the only stretch of relatively undeveloped foreshore with good public access in the borough and at the same time preserve existing facilities for recreational use.

We would be interested to know how local district and parish councillors, boating enthusiasts, members of the public and residents of Weir Quay feel about this proposal.
