THE FRIENDS of Weir Quay have asked the Times to make it clear that the organisation is not a partner of the Weir Quay Community Watersports Hub Club.

The hub club was formed in the summer with the aim of providing a new base for the Tamar and Tavy Gig Club and Weir Quay Sailing Club.

It is currently raising funds to buy land close to the public hard at Weir Quay on which a new clubhouse will be built.

The friends' group said recent promotions of the public forums being held by the hub club had given rise to a misunderstanding regarding the role of the friends.

In a statement to the Times the group said: 'The hub committee invited the friends of Weir Quay to send representatives to its meetings.

'This the friends were more than happy to do, convinced that the hub club was searching for the best solution to the problem created by the non-renewal of the lease of the premises previously used by Weir Quay Sailing Club and the gig club.'

It said, however, that the friends were not and had never been a partner of the club: 'Attendance of our representatives has been sporadic. They did not participate in voting on any specific policy or in the drafting of documents such as applications for funding,' said the organisation.

'Indeed, they repeatedly emphasised that they could not give views on support or non-support of the hub club's project until all members had been consulted; they were present merely with a watching brief.'

The aim of the friends' group was to reflect its members wishes once they had been formulated.
