KELLY College hosted Tavistock College in four closely fought games of cricket at U13, U14, U15 and U16 levels.
Although Kelly were victorious in all four games, they were all evenly contested and could have gone either way.
In the U13s match, Kelly were limited to 86-5 from their 20 overs. All Tavistock's bowlers proved accurate, although the highlight was the two wickets in two balls by A Dingle, who finished with an excellent return of 2-6.
The stand between G Webb (23) and S Twaites (21 not out) proved crucial in Kelly's total, which might have been a reachable target for Tavistock had not P Scott been unluckily run out for 19 when he seemed about to dominate the bowling.
At U14 level, Kelly amassed an impressive 108-3 from their allotted 20 overs, thanks largely to the stand between A Koranteng (51 not out) and J Hare (21 not out).
In reply, Tavistock were never far behind the run rate, especially while left-hander I Grey (40) was at the crease.
In the end, accurate bowling and fine fielding by Kelly was the effective difference between the sides, Tavistock finishing just 18 runs short at 89-4.
In the U15s, despite Tavistock's opening bowlers conceding only 29 runs from the first 8 overs, Kelly amassed 120 runs, thanks largely to a lightning 42 from S Morton, with J Shaw offering solid support.
Tavistock never really threatened the Kelly total, and all the Kelly bowlers returned tidy figures, with J Dennis (1-14 from 4) and R Hall (1-0 from 2) being especially miserly.
On the main square Kelly's second XI team got the better of Tavistock's U16s. Kelly made 114-6 with T Partridge's 34 being the main contribution. Tavistock's determination to chase this total inevitably led to the loss of wickets and they were all out with time to spare, just 18 runs short.
If just one or two batsmen had played themselves in, this match could easily have gone the way of the visitors.
All the matches were played in an excellent spirit of friendly rivalry, probably as many of the players are used to playing together in club cricket.
