ROCKING students from Chelfham Senior School at Bere Alston have written, composed and performed their own original song. What started out as a regular music lesson with teacher Ewan Miller, snowballed into a music and media fest. Students Mark, Peter and Kieran, originally started to work in a songwriting workshop with Ewan. By the end of the lesson the group had mastered the song and had even come up with good ideas and some authentic lyrics. The track was entitled, ?Friday Night?. Ewan is a music consultant for the government and was able to use his contacts to find the group some cheap studio time. They were taken to Green Door Studios in Woolfardisworthy by Ewan and resident singer Emma Young, a teacher at Chelfham. With the help of proprietor and producer Luke Bond, they came up with a catchy pop-punk track. Ewan said: ?The song ?Friday Night? is based on love and relationships ? with a sound of pop and punk. ?The boys enjoy the sound of Green Day so they wanted to input the style of punk into the music.? At the recording studio Mark, Peter and Kieran learned how to set up equipment and operate the recording programme. Luke recorded the drums and bass, while Ewan performed the lead guitar sections. Emma provided the main vocal. Finally, everyone gathered around the microphone to record the backing vocals. The whole session was engineered and mixed by Kieran with occasional assistance from Luke. Ewan decided to get the song onto film and approached Denham Productions who agreed to film at the school. Ewan said: ?The boys had a fantastic time. If anything has come out of this, it is that it has raised their self-esteem and got the boys to work as a team. ?The crew said how well behaved the boys were and how they were so impressed with them. ?This event has really boosted their confidence. Everyone had a great time. Some of them are raring to go and record again.? The video is now being edited, while the group works on the design and packaging. It is hoped the final product will be available after half-term at the Chelfham stall in Tavistock Pannier Market. Ewan expressed thanks to Luke Bond from the studio, Meg, Nick and the team at Denham Productions, Chelfham music department, and to Kieran, Peter and Mark for their levels of enthusiasm.
