AN appeal was this week issued to charities, schools and community organisations in the Tavistock area who may be looking for a venue to stage special events.

Deputy town clerk Rosie Kehoe said the council is hoping groups will remember that there is an area right in the town centre which is large, flat, open, generally available ? and entirely free to users ? Bedford Square.

The town council is responsible for issuing licenses for square bookings ? and would like to see much more use of the paved area in front of the town hall.

Mrs Keyhoe said: ?Now the new traffic orders are in force and the cars have been removed from the paved area, we would really like it to be used by the community.

?There is no charge for it, people just need to apply to us for a licence. There are two electrical sockets, so we obviously have to make a charge for what power is used, but other than that, it?s free!?

Mrs Keyhoe said she was sure the square would be ideal for a wide range of uses which would provide a focal point for visitors to Tavistock.

?It?s good for the vibrancy of the town. If people see something is happening on the square as they drive in, they do stop,? she said.

Any groups or individuals who would like to chat about possible square bookings and terms and conditions should call the town council on 01822 613529.
