FREE radons tests are now available to West Devon residents thanks to a local partnership agreement. West Devon Borough Council is working with the Health Protection Agency, the Primary Care Trust and the Building Research Establishment to provide the free service. More than 12,000 letters have recently been sent out, inviting residents to receive the free radon test — normally costing around £40. The tests can identify the levels of radon in homes and the letters are being sent to properties in the borough with a 5% or higher possibility of being affected by radon. A naturally occurring radioactive gas, high levels of radon are known to increase the risk of developing lung cancer. However, if a high level of radon is discovered, it will be relatively simple to put right and the borough council can advise on ways to reduce levels. Dave Banks, West Devon's head of regulatory services, said: 'I would urge all residents invited to participate in the free testing to do so. 'Most houses tested will be below government action levels but it is important that those that are not, are identified, and occupiers are given advice and can take responsible decisions.' Residents who receive a letter and would like a free test need complete the form enclosed within the letter and return it in the pre-paid envelope. Two monitors, which look like plastic discs, will be sent upon receiving the form, and these are placed in the living room and bedroom for three months. Test kits are then returned to the Health Protection Agency's Radiation Protection Division. The test results, together with an explanation, will be sent back to participating residents with appropriate information on ways to reduce the levels if necessary. Further advice on reducing any high radon levels is also available at local exhibitions where there will be an opportunity to discuss the most appropriate method for reducing radon levels with the professional advisors. The council will hold all results obtained in confidence. For further information on this programme call Wendy Cooper or Vicky Bailey on 01822 813600.
