free business start-up courses are on offer to budding entrepreneurs in West Devon next month.

Two courses are being run in Okehampton and Tavistock in November, provided by West Devon Business Information Point.

Jerry Bix, business advisor, said: 'These courses provide a very sound basis to help anyone successfully start a business.

'We will teach necessary skills and give essential information to help applicants get their ideas off the ground.'

Mr Bix said trainers on the courses, which are run on an informal, practical basis, have years of experience in running small businesses.

Each course is four days long and has a certificate provided by NatWest Bank.

Topics include where to find finance, business planning, marketing, VAT, cash-flow forecasts, balance sheets and skills identification.

Applicants will be given help with their business ideas and given follow-up assistance.

Mr Bix said: 'These courses have proved very popular this year and have helped a great many people realise their dream of working for themselves.

'People who establish their businesses on a sound footing are far more likely to still be in business after three years, contributing to the local economy and saving themselves the heartache of failing.'

The first course will run in the Ordulph Arms in Tavistock between November 7 and 15, and at the Plume of Feathers Hotel in Okehampton between November 21 and 29.

Light lunch and refreshments are included. To reserve a place, call 0800 592 872.
